Flower Care
To keep your fresh-cut flowers looking beautiful for as long as possible, follow these care tips:
1. Trim the Stems
- Trim about 1 inch (2.5 cm) off the bottom of the stems at a 45-degree angle. This helps them absorb water more effectively. Always use sharp scissors or pruning shears to avoid crushing the stems.
- Repeat this step every two days to maintain the best water absorption.
2. Water Immediately
- Place the flowers in water right after cutting. Ensure the water is lukewarm or at room temperature—too hot or cold can shock the flowers.
- Fill the vase with water, leaving space for the stems to be submerged fully. Use clean water to avoid bacteria growth.
3. Use Flower Food
- If your flowers came with a packet of flower food, mix it with the water according to the instructions. The food helps provide nutrients and slows bacterial growth.
- If you don't have flower food, you can make a homemade solution using a mix of 1 teaspoon sugar, 1 teaspoon bleach, and 2 teaspoons lemon juice for every quart of water.
4. Remove Leaves Below the Water Line
- Any leaves that are submerged in water can rot and create bacteria. Remove these leaves to help the flowers stay fresh longer.
5. Place in the Right Spot
- Keep the flowers in a cool, draft-free spot away from direct sunlight, heat sources (like radiators or electronics), and fruits (which release ethylene gas that speeds up flower aging).
6. Change the Water Regularly
- Change the water every 2-3 days to keep it clean and free from bacteria. Remember to re-trim the stems each time you change the water.
7. Avoid Spraying
- While it's tempting to mist your flowers, some types of flowers do better when they're not sprayed with water. It's best to focus on keeping the water in the vase fresh.
By following these steps, you can extend the life of your fresh-cut flowers and enjoy them longer!
